3.2 · Examine Internal Tensions, Not Imaginary Opponents
Goal: ask the AI for material contradictions grounded in the proposal’s goals, means and restrictions.
A coherent plan can defeat itself
A repair company wants to serve 30% more requests using the same staff, no overtime and unchanged first-time resolution. This may or may not be feasible. The point is to ask what productivity assumptions the proposal needs, whether its incentives could undermine them and which observations would settle the issue. Asking “argue the opposite” would produce opinions without explaining the mechanism.
Four critical questions
- What assumption must hold for this plan to work?
- Could an effect of the plan undermine that very assumption?
- Under what conditions might the objectives be compatible?
- What evidence would distinguish the cases?
Analyze the proposal [text]. Identify at most three internal tensions, not matters of personal taste. For each, give the premise, predicted consequence, mechanism, compatibility conditions, and a possible disconfirming observation. Label speculative tensions as hypotheses. Also explain how the proposal could succeed.
Adversarial review of a strong answer
Take a previous AI report with an attractive table and priority ranking. Have a second conversation evaluate: claim, hidden assumption, observation that would refute it, and practical consequence of error. Discard generic objections. A single substantial weakness can matter more than ten theatrical criticisms.
Exercise: design a flexible-shift policy that claims to lower costs and improve customer service. Produce a tension matrix with explicit tests, including at least one scenario where the supposed contradiction does not occur.
